I went to detox for the first time 2 weeks ago and I wrote this reflection today. I didn’t expect things to magically turn around and to be singing coombia but I haven’t really felt any good changes yet. I didn’t know where else to post this and if I am alone feeling this way.
When you stop drinking,
People close to you will say things like, “I am proud of you”, “it takes courage and strength to admit you have a problem and to do something about it” “we’re still friends, we’ll still invite you to stuff and we’ll figure out stuff to do” “you’ll feel better soon, it gets better” “no shame in getting help”
It feels like bullshit. You feel alone, you feel left out. You feel like everyone you know now treats you different. The fun is gone and those closest to you will tell you to replace that void with lame shit, like cleaning or walking around aimlessly. “Find a new hobby”- well guess what all the things you used to do for fun, like golf, watching the big game, meeting up with friends, you can’t really do anymore because drinking was usually involved and now it just seems like a piece of it is missing.
The boredom is bad, watching movies you’ve already seen just to pass the time. Going to bed early because you don’t know what else to do. I’ve never been one to claim the world resolves around me because it certainly doesn’t. All your friends will be nice to your face and say that they support you, but really that is to make themselves feel good. They all still go out (and I don’t blame them) and tell you all about their fun weekend trips, going to the new brewery, nights out and adventures come Monday morning and then realize “oh shit he probably doesn’t want to hear this and then just awkwardly look at their shoes without even you having to say anything.
Your family, girlfriend, friends, doctor, social worker, coworkers anyone who knows will instinctively look at you different. Some because they actually care and some because they don’t know what else to do. You will lose friends, and it will all happen all at once. All you want is to go back the way it was but it can never truly go back even if you go ahead and pick up the bottle just to numb the pain.
It seems to get worse with every new person you have to tell “I can’t go out tonight” for no good reason and you feel like some outcast, to people who know you the best. You end up sitting around playing with legos and building Star Wars models like an 8 year old because you don’t want to be the son that joins the 27 club. It hasn’t been that long but so far sobriety sucks ass.

I just I had to write it I have had the idea for how to present this character for like the last three months and it’s been annoying me like crazy I don’t even like the character I just have to ride it because every time I try to write something else a storyline for this particular character pops up and it’s annoying so the plot bunnies one I have to write the story anyone else have an idea that just won’t go away
